Could anyone confirm whether range finders are allowed for use on golf courses and probably more importantly in our society. If so are there any restrictions on there use.

The use of range-finders IS allowed by the R&A provided that there is a local-rule in place, i.e. that the club says it's okay. However, the device must only measure distance. This last bit means that if a device can measure wind-speed for example (even if this function can be turned off), the device is illegal.
Here's a quote from the R&A site:
Quote:
In November 2009, The R&A and the USGA issued a joint statement of principles regarding the use of electronic devices, including distance-measuring devices. The R&A and the USGA reaffirmed that these devices, allowed solely when a relevant Local Rule is in operation, may be used to measure distance only and must not be able to measure other conditions such as wind speed or direction, slope of the ground or temperature.

Correct, our rules say:

Quote:
Unless otherwise stated in this document, all rules of golf are as laid down by the “Royal and Ancient” will apply.

So, they are legal in our matches provided there is a local rule in place allowing them.

Of course, the website rules also state:

Quote:
The rules displayed on the website are intended to be a copy of the club rules. Where there is any conflict between rules displayed on the website and the official rules maintained by the Secretary, the official rules take precedence.

So, change your copy anyway you want matey....they're official. Now that's power!

Hi all it has got to something when the debate is about distance finders...i think a visit to the opticians is needed ( the old eyes dont see well )find 200-150-100yrd markers then add or subtract the distance your ball lies from said marker.....or is the brain unable to multi function ha ha!Brick wall
Good Luck with the new season.

Eyup Dave,

Mr Kelsall is still none committal with regards to his enquiry, as he will not say weather HE has got one, OR he knows someone else who has!!Shhh

I think that theres a good possibility that he has got one, or is considering getting one, because as you quite rightly state Dave that once you get to a certain age the old mince pies dont seem to work as good as they used too, and the old grey matter tends to not be as good with the old arithmetic either.Think

Must say gents, quite surprised to find Mr Denman engaging in mind games before the season has even started. Course I do quite well under such pressure as the GOY board shows. 2010 starting off well don't you think. Wish I was part of elitist club though !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just for info, eyes work excellent beyond 30cm.

Having read the above post`s I would like to ask the question if its possible to use my iphone on the course ? and before every body responds with the Red Lion rule of no phones, this is an application that can be used whilst playing a round of golf to record all your stats and score card and not for making calls

Please adviseThink

I personally would not object to mobile phones being used so long as they are on silent and not being used to make or receive calls.

One other point is that while we are messing on the phone we are not concentrating on the game. It will take time to input scores and result in even longer games than we already have. And as we all know that attend meetings from time to time, slow play has and probably always will be one of the most contentious issues that keeps recurring.

Of course we have to adhere to the rules of the club we are visiting and many of them state no telephones on course or clubhouse. Views from other forum members would be interesting. Brick wall Brick wall Brick wall Brick wall

I think the rules are clear, there's no problem using the iphone applications as a range finder. As I mentioned earlier in the thread, the club has to have a local rule allowing range finders....I honestly don't know how common that is.

Personally, I don't think there's much of an advantage since if anyone tells me it's exactly 171 yards to the flag.....I've still got to get the ball there and I can't hit the same club the same distance twice on the trot.

All told, my opinion is we should let anyone use them whenever they want. If someone's good enough that knowing the exact distance will make a difference, chances are they're going to win anyway.

What I want is remote controlled balls......Steady Kelsall....you know the rules on the forum!
